Courageous Conversations : The power of the Drums

Drum Therapy at the end of Day 1
Drum Therapy at the end of Day 1

Last week, I had the honour of attending the Courageous Conversations conference hosted by Laurel House and the Sexual Assault Support Service in Launceston, in two roles, one as a therapist, the other with my drums.

This powerful two-day event brought together professionals, advocates, and community members committed to addressing and preventing child sexual abuse. It was a space of deep listening, learning, and reflection. A space where courageous, often painful, truths were spoken with compassion and care.

Throughout the two days, we explored the impacts of child sexual abuse, the importance of trauma-informed support, and the collective responsibility we all hold in creating safer communities for children. The lived experience stories that were shared were heartbreaking, inspiring, and above all, brave.

At the end of Day 1, I had the privilege of offering a drumming session. As we gathered in a circle, the rhythm of the drums created a moment of unity and release, an invitation to breathe, move, and reconnect after a day of heavy content. The session was thoroughly welcomed and served as a gentle reminder of the healing power of rhythm, community, and presence.

I’m grateful to Laurel House and SASS for creating a space where such vital conversations can take place. Being part of this event reaffirmed the importance of holding space for both truth-telling and healing.

At The Drum Collective, I believe in the power of rhythm to restore, reconnect, and empower. It was an honour to share that with everyone present.

Congratulations to all involved in pulling this important conference together. All speakers brought a great deal of knowledge, wisdom and educated us all on how we can all actively play a role for the future of our children.

Yours in rhythm
