The Joy of Rhythm : Feeling the power of the drums at Meercroft Care.

There’s something truly special about the power of rhythm—how it connects us, lifts our spirits, and brings a sense of togetherness. Last week, I had the absolute pleasure of returning to Meercroft Care for the third time, sharing the joy of djembe drumming with the lovely residents.

From the moment the first beat echoed through the room, faces lit up with excitement. Hands tapped along, some confidently keeping the beat, others simply feeling the vibrations and energy of the drums, or a shaker. Laughter and smiles filled the space as we played together, creating rhythm in the moment.

Djembe drumming is more than just a fun activity; it’s a therapeutic experience. It encourages self-expression, mindfulness, and connection, helping to boost mood, improve coordination, and stimulate the mind. For many of the residents, the rhythm sparked memories, movement, and a sense of community and connection, as this is where we feel belonging—reminding us all that rhythm has no age limit.

Each session at Meercroft has been a beautiful reminder of why I do what I do. Seeing residents engage, connect, and find joy through drumming is truly rewarding. I can’t wait to return again and continue sharing this experience.

With love and harmony
